Your AAdvantage Status Playbook
Five steps to earn status faster and cheaper than the conventional path. Honest math, no fluff, every recommendation tied to a tool you can use today.
How AAdvantage status actually works
AAdvantage status is earned by accumulating Loyalty Points (LP). Different tiers have different thresholds:
| Tier | LP needed | Flight earn bonus (flights only) |
|---|---|---|
| Gold | 40,000 | +40% |
| Platinum | 75,000 | +60% |
| Platinum Pro | 125,000 | +80% |
| Executive Platinum | 200,000 | +120% |
The trick: AA Hotels has elevated earn rates that, combined with the right credit card, produce the highest Loyalty Points per dollar anywhere in the AA ecosystem. That's the lever this whole site is built around.
Get an AAdvantage card — and know which part the Executive World Legend actually buys you
Getting an AAdvantage card is the single biggest leverage point in the AA strategy. AA Hotels pays 5× Loyalty Points with any AAdvantage card, and 10× once you add any elite status. Without a card and without status, you earn 1×. That 10× cap is card-agnostic — a $99 MileUp reaches it. Where the Citi Executive World Legend (formerly World Elite) pulls ahead is the second currency: 12× AAdvantage miles per dollar on AA Hotels card spend, against 6× on Globe and 1× on everything else.
On a typical $200 AA Hotels stay:
- No card: ~700 LP
- Any AAdvantage card, no status: ~4,250 LP
- Any AAdvantage card + elite status (Gold or higher): ~7,800 LP
Annual fee rose to $695 on 2026-08-23. That is a real cost, and worth being straight about: the Loyalty Points math does not require this specific card. To hit Platinum (75K LP) you'd need ~110 stays with no card and no status, versus ~18 once you hold any AAdvantage card. What the $695 buys is the 12× miles rate, the Loyalty Point milestone bonuses, and Admirals Club access — so it pays back if you book enough AA Hotels stays to earn out the miles difference, and not otherwise.
Apply for AA's Status Match (if you qualify)
If you already hold earned status with Delta, United, JetBlue, or Southwest, AA will match it for 4 months — for free. You start at the matched tier immediately, then need to hit a reduced LP threshold during those 4 months to keep it.
| Other airline | AA matched tier | LP to keep (4 mo) |
|---|---|---|
| Southwest A-List | Gold | 13,000 |
| Delta Gold / Plat / Diamond | Gold / Plat Pro / Exec Plat | 13K / 42K / 67K |
| United Premier Gold / Plat / 1K | Gold / Plat Pro / Exec Plat | 13K / 42K / 67K |
| JetBlue Mosaic 1 / 2 / 3-4 | Gold / Plat / Plat Pro | 13K / 25K / 42K |
Important: AA only matches earned status (from real flying). Promotional or matched status from other programs doesn't qualify per AA's official terms. See our Status Match page →
Find stays that earn the most LP per dollar
Not all AA Hotels stays are created equal. The same chain shows wildly different LP/$ rates across cities and dates. We rank stays across hotels and dates by Loyalty Points per dollar and verify each one is bookable before it is shown.
Use these tools to find them:
Don't leave LP on the table within a single stay
AA Hotels caps loyalty earnings at 15,000 LP per reservation — regardless of how many nights it covers. Book a long stay as one reservation and you forfeit everything past that ceiling. The Cap Splitter tells you when to split a long stay into multiple bookings to capture all the available LP.
Example: a 5-night Vegas stay earning ~13K LP per night would cap at 15K under one reservation. Splitting into five separate single-night reservations earns ~65K LP instead — same hotel, same dates, same total cost.
